Flower Power

Flower Power:

Common Name: Kudzu
Family: Leguminosae (Pea)
Genus: Pueraria
Species: Lobata

Description: This is a very prolific vine, growing to heights of sixty feet or more. The blossom is rather small, pealike, and blush purple. The compound leaves are large and divided into three rounded lobes.

Habitat: roadsides, wasteplaces
Blooms: July through September

Kudzu's introduction to the U.S. dates back to 1876. In the Japanese Pavilion at this exposition was a "wonder" plant, "pueraria lobata", or Kudzu. The Japanese used this vine as a forage plant and as food and medicine. The root was ground into fine powder, which was a prized food. The leaves too were eaten, cooked like other greens. In Japan the plant never became a pest, mainly because of the intensive land-use practices there.

Was once thought to be a godsend for eroded areas in the South.Grows on steep banks of red clay, but it also grew very quickly. It was grown commercially as a forage plant and in areas with poor soil to help enrich the soil.

For a short time it was often called "King Kudzu". as Kudzu began tp "eat" telephone poles and trees, however, people became somewhat disenchanted with this wonder plant. Eventually it was accused of being the plant that ate the south.

Kudzu can grow 80 to 100 feet during a single growing season (holy crap that's tall) and will cover just about anything. Is especially noticeable alsong highways where control measures have not been practiced.

Kudzu is no longer commercially grown, because it is difficult to harvest mechanically and too easy to overgraze. Kudzu can be used to make vine wreaths, though the finished product is not nearly as shiny or graceful as wreaths made with grape vines.

In some of the earliest interpretations of 'Beauty and the Beast' the paintings portray the 'Beast' as a wild boar...not a giant talking wolf. No! No! He was a giant talking wild boar, with tusks and all!! That is my random fact of the day!!! ^_^

1856
The constant rustling in the bushes had been enough for Caroline. She knew what or rather who was making the noise. She was half-tempted to go and gather her father from the bar. If she pretended it was a prowler her father would sober up to save face in public and rush off as if her was concerned. Caroline’s father knew how to sneak up on prey and be quiet about it. She knew her father would be pissed when he saw what was going on outside ten feet from his house. She knew that Fiona would never forgive her, then again not being able to get sleep for eight days in a row had Caroline on the edge of her seat. Another five minutes passed and the rustling continued. So Caroline decided it was time to have herself some fun. She crept quietly to the kitchen and found her special candle in the cupboard. She had soaked the candle in chicken blood and varoius spices. This way when it was lit the smell would be unbearable. She found her fathers matches in his pipe box. Slowly Caroline slipped out the side door and walked around the house until she was twenty feet away the bush. She lit the candle and waited until the stench she has so anxiously awaited had started to waft in the air. She set the candle down on the ground and let her hair down. Her fiery red hair, which noone else in Caroline’s family had. Townsfolk used to fear Caroline when she was younger. The rumors started when she was six months old that she was the spawn of some supernatural creature. Churchgoers said it wasn’t god-like to have hair that red. These rumors drove Caroline and Fiona’s mother mad and then to her grave. Caroline tore a hole in her nightgown. It was an old nightgown so her father wouldn’t mind as long as he thought it was an accident. The rustling had started to get louder and various grunts emerged through the leaves. Caroline suddenly let out a shrill scream. She threw her body on the ground and started writhing and kicking. Her sister and the mailboy flew out of the bushes and to the spot where Caroline’s arms and legs were flailing in the air. Her bright red hair and rusted brown gown were a mess and the apalling smell of the candle had apparantly achieved its goal. Fiona screamed while the mailboy looked on in shock neither being able to determine what was wrong. Finally Caroline’s laughter broke through her screams and she laid her arms and legs down on the ground. She couldn’t help but roll away as her sister tried to kick her, finally seeing that the episode was a prank. By the time she was tired and out of breath Caroline could hardly stand. The mialboy, Tommy, had put the candle out and dumped into the forest behind the house. Fiona slapped her younger sister on the back again before stalking off into the house with Tommy on her heels. “Poor chap”, Caroline said out loud, “he didn’t even notice his pants were down the whole time”. Tonight was a good night Caroline thought to herself; she had no idea it would be the last time she would see her sister…Alive.
